Do Something — Anything

At the beginning of every year many of my career mentoring clients ask for advice on how to make this their best year ever.  My answer is always the same…

  • Be clear on what you want.
  • Commit to doing to the work necessary to get what you want.
  • Build unshakeable self confidence.
  • Actively manage your career.

This article lays out 10 things you can do to be more successful in 2015.

I particularly like the fourth piece of advice — beat procrastination simply by doing.  The Nike ads have it right — just do it.  Sometimes easier said than done, but I’ve found that successful people have the will to do what they don’t necessarily want to do, but know that they need to do.  They also are willing to look their fears in the eye and do something.

There are days when I just feel uninspired and have a difficult time writing blog posts.  I beat this by keeping a file of blog ideas.  Just checking out this file gives me the motivation I need to get off my butt, stop complaining about my lack of inspiration and write something.  Getting started is the best way to finish important tasks.

Then there’s fear.  As I’ve said many times, procrastination is the physical manifestation of fear.  When I find my self procrastinating, I ask a simple question, “What are you afraid of here, Bud?”  Usually the answer is fear of failure, or fear of doing a poor job.  Merely identifying this fear gets me going.

Don’t let procrastination derail your career this year.  Do something.  That’s the way to beat procrastination.

Your career mentor,

Bud
