Friedrich Nietzsche was a Philosopher beyond compare.
His above quote left me dumbfounded – because of its true depiction of how adults learn – an explanation that precedes by at least 84 years the theory of Experiential Learning developed by David A Kolb in 1984 (Nietzsche died in 1900).
Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory explains how adults learn. This is a four-part loop: Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. Active Experimentation is the final step done to discover how the first experience and reflection on it now enables one to do something new in another context.
I conduct experiential learning-based programs via zoom when teaching new skills to CEOs and their teams for working under the new norms Post COVID-19. Adults do not want to know theory per se. It will be awesome introducing Friedrich Nietzsche’s above quote to the trainees at the beginning of the program when I explain what experiential learning is and how it creates permanent learning.
