I always tell my career mentoring clients that life is too short to hate your job. Your job is a significant part of your life. It takes up a lot of hours in your day.
Yet, I run into lots of people who tell me that they hate their job, but stay in it. I have a friend who actually made a 500 day calendar to count down to his retirement. 500 days! That’s a year and a half. He had been unhappy at work for many years, but he stuck it out because he didn’t want to lose some retirement benefits. That’s a good reason. But I felt sorry for him because he was so miserable in his job.
This article lays out 10 warning signs that it may be time to quit your job.
All 10 are good reasons. I particularly like number 5 — you feel as if you have no purpose. In my experience it’s really important to be part of a company and industry that you care about.
I love being a part of the career coaching industry. I think that we are doing good work — helping people create successful, fulfilling lives and careers. I get up every morning ready to go because I love what I do.
You should feel this way too. If you don’t you really might want to consider finding another company and industry. A sense of purpose, of feeling that you are involved with something bigger than yourself, is an important contributor to your life and career success.
Your career mentor,
Bud
