Many of my career mentor members tell me that they find in person networking to be a difficult and stressful experience. Yet, networking is the best way to find a job or to advance in your career.
Here are some of my best thoughts on how to become an expert in person networker…
- Be confident. You have something to offer, even if you’re out of a job and looking.
- Begin by getting to know people. There will be plenty of time to ask for favors or referrals later.
- Give before you get. When you meet someone new think about what you can do to help him or her, not what he or she can do to help you.
- Introduce people who you think should know one another.
- Be generous with your praise. Everybody likes positive comments.
- Listen more than you speak. Use the 1/3 — 2/3 rule. Speak 1/3 of the time, and listen 2/3 of the time. People will think you’re a brilliant conversationalist.
- Share information about yourself, your passions, interests, family. This makes it easier for other people to engage with you.
- Welcome other people into your conversations. Don’t let someone stand there all alone. A three way conversation can be more interesting than a two way one.
- Follow up with people you meet. Ask them to meet for coffee or a drink. Keep the conversation going.
If you follow these simple ideas you’ll do well at networking events. Remember, take it slow. Get to know people before you ask for their help.
