Career Advice From a Comedy Queen

Caroline Hirsch is the queen of comedy in New York City.  She owns the famous comedy club, Caroline’s on Broadway and is the Owner and Executive Producer of the New York Comedy Festival.

Although she works in comedy, Caroline Hirsch is serious about business. Here are her three best life and career success tips…

  • Always go with your gut.
  • Truly believe in what you’ve created, and stay with it until it clicks.
  • Be on time.  I hate it when people are late.

Let’s talk about the third piece of advice above.  Punctuality is important.  It shows that you value other people’s time.  Don’t underestimate how important this is.  Over the years many of my clients have told me that they really appreciate the fact that I am always on time.

I must admit, I have a punctuality gene.  I’m always five to minutes early.  That comes naturally.

But I’ve found that being on time, or a little ahead of time, has other advantages than the impression you make on other people.  I use the five or ten minutes of my waiting time to gather my thoughts so I’ll be better prepared for the conversation or meeting I’ll be having.  My brief wait calms me and gets my head into the subject.

Having the punctuality gene, I realize that many (most) people have the tardiness gene.  If you’re one of them, do your best to break the tardiness habit.

One last word — some people think that always being late and running from one place to another brands them as an important, very busy person.  In fact, it brands them as disorganized and disrespectful of other people’s time.
