Carer Advice from the CEO of Red Hat

As a career mentor, I’m always on the lookout for good advice from successful people.

Jim Whitehurst is the CEO of Red Hat, the world leader in open source solutions.

Here are his three best life and career success lessons…

  • Very few companies fail because they focus too much.
  • People get into trouble by taking the next logical step. Do what you really love to do.
  • Choose a job based on the content of the work, not the title and responsibility.

Focus is important to people as well as companies.  In my work with CareerHMO I help job seekers focus on what they really want to do, then focus on finding companies where they really want to work.  This is an self-empowering way to find a job.  And it works.  By focusing on what you really want to do and the companies where you want to do it, you put yourself in the driver’s seat.

But it all begins with focus.  What do you want to do?  Where you do want to do it?  Spend a lot of time answering these questions and you’ll be in a better position to land the job you want with a company where you want to work.
