As Popeye said, “I yam what I yam.” In general I agree with this statement. You have to be true to yourself. However, you also have to realize when you are getting in your own way. Here is a list of five types of employees that drive bosses crazy.
- The Gossip
- The Grump
- The Suck-up
- The Slacker
- The Clown
You want to avoid being labeled as any one of these. Here’s what I tell members of my career mentoring site about each of them.
Gossiping is just plain bad. I have a few simple rules about gossip. Never repeat anything told to me in confidence. Never speak ill of a colleague. Never take pleasure in another’s misfortune.
Grumps are no fun to be around. Put on your happy face. When someone asks, “How are you?” say “I’m great” – even if you’re having a bad day. Most people don’t want to know about your worries and concerns. They have enough of their own.
While you want to work hard, do your best and impress your boss, you don’t want to be seen as the class pet. Do your work. Ask for more when you finish an assignment. But don’t become an apple polisher – someone who is always there to do the boss’ bidding. Your colleagues will resent you and your boss will get tired of you.
On the other hand, you have to pull your weight. Don’t be a slacker. Get your work done on time. Contribute to the team you’re on. Become known as someone others can trust to get things done.
While we all enjoy a good laugh. Some people just overdo it. It’s OK to tell a joke now and then. It’s OK to laugh when you hear a good joke. But don’t become the person who treats work as if it’s practice for open mike night at the comedy club.
If you find that you have tendencies to become of one these five types of people, watch out. Think before you speak – and you’ll be OK.
Your career mentor,
Bud
