How to Achieve Top Of Mind Awareness With Your Network

TOMA — Top Of Mind Awareness is a marketing concept.  Big brands work hard to ensure that their products are at the top of consumers’ minds.  That’s why you see so many car and beer commercials when you watch sports.

However, we all need to stay top of mind with the people in our networks.  This article shows you how you can do just that.

The first step — do something with your contacts is the most important.  Stay in touch with your contacts.  It doesn’t do you any good to make a new contact if you never follow up.

The life of a solopreneur can be a bit of a rollercoaster.  I  go through periods when I am insanely busy, followed by periods when things get slow.  I spend slow days on the phone.  I call clients and friends just to check in.   Usually, these calls bring me some business.  People will say, “Bud, I’m glad you called.  I have this problem and I could use some help.  It’s right up your alley.”  That’s TOMA in action.  Without my call, my clients and friends might never have thought about me.  By calling, I went to the top of their mind, and landed some business.  I have about a 1:20 ratio business to calls.  For every 20 calls I make, I will get one piece of business.

It’s important to stay top of mind with the folks in your network.  Get disciplined about it — call them, email them, send them links to articles they may like, introduce them to people you think they should get to know.
