LinkedIn is a powerful career tool. In this post, I’m sharing the advice I give my career mentoring clients on how to get the most out of LinkedIn.
- Stay active. Update your status frequently. Once a day is a good target to shoot for. Your updates can be a blog post you’ve written, an article that interests people in your field, video or a slideshare presentation you want to share.
- Join relevant LinkedIn groups. Focus on three to five and stay active in them.
- Participate in at least one LinkedIn group discussion every week.
- Follow the influencers in your area. Comment on their posts. Ask them questions.
- Send at least one new LinkedIn invite every day. Personalize your invite — don’t use the LinkedIn’s default request. Introduce yourself and tell the person why you want to connect with him or her.
- Display your contact information prominently. Make it easy for people to get in touch with you.
- Endorse people you know for their skills and expertise. Don’t expect them to reciprocate.
- Put your LinkedIn profile on your business card, your email signature and on your website or blog.
- Tweet your LinkedIn updates.
- Include links to your blog and website on your LinkedIn profile.
LinkedIn can be a very powerful career tool — make sure you take full advantage of it. And don’t forget to check out my LinkedIn profile at www.LinkedIn.com/in/budbilanich.
