Make Your Brand Memorable. Then Reinforce It Consistently and Constantly.

I have a love/hate relationship with Larry Winget.  I usually love what he has to say, and I usually hate how he says it.

This video about courtesy at the movies is a perfect example. http://www.larrywinget.com/watch-before-going-to-the-movies/

I love what Larry has to say here.  His five points are right on in my book.  As someone who goes to the movies pretty frequently, I get annoyed at the same things as Larry.   I’m not so crazy about how he says it — a little too much in your face for me.

Larry calls himself the pitbull of personal development — that’s his brand, and he sticks to it with his in your face style.  This works for him.  It may or may not work for you. For example, I am very unlikely to use the word a**hole in a video.  But that’s Larry and his in your face style.

This reminds me of the idea that a good personal brand should repel some people while attracting others.  Larry doesn’t care if some people are put off by his style.  He figures that there are a whole lot of people who love what he has to say and how he has to say it.

The point here is all about branding.  You want your brand to be memorable.  You want it to highlight your uniqueness.  As I often tell my career mentoring clients, “don’t be a vanilla brand, be a Cherry Garcia brand.”   You’ve got to admit that branding yourself as a pitbull is audacious.  I applaud Larry for the guts it took to do so.

Larry has chosen, with great success I must add, to brand himself as an outspoken in your face kind of guy.  It works for him — all the way down to his shaved head, beard and fancy cowboy shirts.  I admire him for consistently and constantly staying on brand.

That’s what you need to do too.  Once you figure out your brand consistently and constantly act in a manner that reinforces it.

While this post is about branding, it’s also about simple courtesy.  Keep Larry’s five points in mind the next time you are at the movies.

Your career mentor,

Bud
