Soft Skills for Career Success

I love Sam Parker’s life and career success ideas.  The other day, I received an email from him that was entitled, “Soft Skills Are Really the Hard Skills.”  I agree.  Sam listed eight soft skills that he thinks are important for personal and organizational success: 1) Attentive, 2) Approachable, 3) Humble, 4) Kind, 5) Encouraging, 6) Resourceful, 7) Resilient, and 8) Objective.

Sam discusses these ideas in his book Smile and Move.  You can check it out here.

As in yesterday’s post from the folks at TLNT.com, Sam’s list got me thinking about the career advice in Success Tweets, one of my career success books.  Below, you’ll find my thoughts on which of the 141 Tweets in Success Tweets corresponds to the eight important soft skills Sam lists…

Attentive

Success Tweet 124 – Everyone has something to offer.  Never dismiss anyone out of hand.  Take the initiative.  Actively build relationships.

Approachable

Success Tweet 110 – Remember and use people’s names.  Look for common ground with the people you meet.  Find out about them, their hobbies and passions.

Humble

Success Tweet 74 – When someone compliments you, just say “Thank you.”  When someone criticizes you, say “Thank you.  I’ll work on that.”

Kind

Success Tweet 122 – Keep confidences and avoid gossip.  Don’t embarrass others by repeating what they share with you – even if it isn’t in confidence.

Encouraging

Success Tweet 131 – Be happy to see others succeed.  Use the success of others to motivate you to greater success.

Resourceful

Success Tweet 37 – It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it.  Don’t dwell on the negative.  Use it as a springboard to action and creativity.

Resilient

Success Tweet 35 – Persistent people keep going; especially in the face of difficulties.  Keep at it and you will accomplish your goals.

Objective

Success Tweet 18 – You’ve got to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything.  Your values help you make decisions in ambiguous situation.

The career success coach point here is simple common sense.  As Sam Parker points out, soft skills are really the hard skills we all need to create our life and career success.  He lists eight critical soft skills: 1) Attentive, 2) Approachable, 3) Humble, 4) Kind, 5) Encouraging, 6) Resourceful, 7) Resilient, and 8) Objective.  How do you stack up on each of these soft skills?  I suggest you take some time and do an honest assessment of yourself.  Use the soft skills in which you are proficient to help you develop the ones in which you’re not so good.

That’s the career advice I found in Sam Parker’s thoughts on soft skills.  What do you think?  Please take a minute to share your thoughts with us in a comment.  In the meantime, thanks for reading my daily musings on life and career success.  I value you and I appreciate you.
