You can’t land a job if you present yourself as damaged goods. In this video my friend JT O’Donnell, founder of Careerealism and Career HMO, points out that being out of work can be tough on your confidence and can lead you to present yourself as damaged goods to potential employers.

As JT points out, crises of confidence are difficult to overcome — especially on your own. You need to get help. JT and I are in the business of helping people create successful and fulfilling careers. We help our clients rebuild their confidence and land jobs. And, while we believe that enlisting the services of a professional career coach is a great way to overcome a crisis of confidence due to a job loss or long period of unemployment, we also know that there are many free resources out there to help you rebuild your confidence and stop presenting yourself as damaged goods.
Our advice is to get help. Work with your college alumni association. Become active in the professional societies that serve your industry. Volunteer with local non profits. Turn to your network and ask for help. Hire a career coach. It doesn’t matter where you get the help. Getting the help is what matters.
Don’t go it alone. Being out of work can be a lonely and isolating experience. But it doesn’t have to be. Get help. Rebuild your confidence. You’ll get back on track.
Your career mentor,
Bud
