Want to be More Productive?

I hear it all the time from my career mentoring clients…

“I know I should be working on actively managing my career, but I don’t have the time.  I’m too busy with my current job and my family.”

Most of the time, these folks have a productivity problem.  They confuse being busy with being productive.

Darren Hardy is the publisher of SUCCESS Magazine.  In this article he shares productivity tips of some well known and very success people.

I particularly like Darren’s 4 P’s of Productivity:

  • Produce
  • Pass
  • Purge
  • Purgatory

I love the purgatory idea.  Put an item in there that you don’t want to purge.  Wait six months.  If it still seems important, act on it (produce) or pass it on to someone else.  If not purge it.  This is great advice because it allows you to hang on to an item you don’t feel comfortable purging immediately while not stressing over it every day.

I have found that when I put something into purgatory I usually end up purging it.  This saves me a lot of angst.  It’s much easier to purge something after you’ve let it sit for six months.
