What Will Your Legacy Be?

Over the past few years, I’ve significantly cut back on my organizational effectiveness consulting and have begun focusing more on teaching, career coaching, speaking and my career mentoring site.  Several people have asked why I’ve made this move.  My short answer is that “It’s legacy time.”

I’ve been very fortunate in my life and career.  I’ve achieved more that I ever thought possible growing up in a little steel town in Western PA.  I’ve worked hard, had a little bit of luck and have benefited from the help, guidance and mentoring of many fine people.  Now it’s legacy time.

Right now I’m all about doing everything I can to help as many people as I can.  That’s why I clicked on this article as soon as I saw it.

I agree with all five points in the article, but I have been concentrating on two of them as I build my legacy: Transfer of Knowledge and Passing on Values and Life Lessons.  In my mind, these are two of the things I am most able to do to help others create successful and fulfilling lives and careers.

I tell my MBA students that some day when they are in a C Level position and faced with a perplexing leadership challenge, I hope that they think back to my class and say, “What would that guy Bud have told me to do in this situation?”  Most likely I won’t be around then, but hopefully my advice, my legacy, will live on.

It’s never too early to begin building your legacy.  As the article suggests, think about what you can do to “touch the real lives of real people.”  When you do this, you’ll not only be building a strong legacy, you’ll be making a real difference — in people’s lives, your company and your community.

The article ends with some wisdom that is worth repeating here…

“Stories will be told about you. As author Charles de Lint said, ‘We’re all made of stories. When they finally put us underground, the stories are what will go on.’ Find out what your narrative is, then hire yourself as an editor of the eternal and rewrite as necessary.”

Your career mentor,

Bud
