Members of my career mentoring site will tell you that I believe that you need to manage your career. If you don’t, no one else will. This article reinforces that point…

Liz says that “the worst career mistake you can make is to put your faith in any employer, function or industry.” I agree that this is a biggy. But she ended her article with what I consider to be an even worse mistake — thinking that good performance is enough.
“They think that getting excellent ratings on their next performance review is the big win. It’s not. It’s nearly insignificant!”
I don’t think that an excellent performance review is insignificant. I do think that it is not nearly enough if you want to climb the corporate ladder. I tell members of my career site that good performance is the admission to the career success sweepstakes. You have to be a great performer if you want to succeed. But good performance is not enough.
In my book Climbing the Corporate Ladder I list seven keys to a successful career.
