Your Success GPS

I send a success quote to members of my career mentoring site every day. I didn’t sent this one from George Herbert, a priest, but I think it makes a great point about life and career success…

“Skill and confidence are an unconquered army.”

My book Your Success GPS was published way back in 2009. I introduced it with one of my favorite quotes, this one from Paul Meyer, a well- known motivational speaker – “Whatever you can vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act on…must inevitably come to pass.”

Mr. Herbert’s quote may have been an even better way to start the book. It hits at two of the three keys to success that I discuss: confidence and competence. Here’s how I introduced the book…

“Just like a global positioning system that has three components — satellites orbiting the earth, control and monitoring stations on earth and the GPS receivers owned by individuals – your success GPS is also made up of three components key to your success: commitment to taking personal responsibility for your success, confidence in your ability to succeed and competence in a number of career management skills.

“Disaster relief and emergency service organizations depend on their GPS systems to help them plan their life saving missions. You will come to rely on your success GPS to help you create the life and career success you want and deserve.

“The success GPS system is simple in concept. This of each of the three components – commitment, confidence, competence – as three sides of a triangle. Imagine a circle in the exact middle of that triangle. You want to stay balanced, stay inside the circle in the triangle.

“Now you won’t always be in balance. Occasionally, you’ll drift from that circle. You might get complacent and begin to take things for granted, resulted in a loss of commitment. You might lose a job and suffer a crisis of confidence. You might forget what you know and make a stupid mistake which may cause you to question your competence.

“All of these things are normal and human. When they happen – and they will, remember the success GPS triangle and get yourself back to that center circle. Stay inside that center circle and you’ll keep moving forward toward the life and career success you deserve.”

In my opinion, Mr. Herbert got two of the three things necessary to become unconquerable: confidence and competence.  Don’t forget about the third: commitment.
