How to Prepare for a Job Interview with a Fortune 500 Company

If you like being part of a large organization, getting a job with a Fortune 500 company can be a great career option. I’ve worked for three Fortune 500 companies and have consulted with many more. Fortune 500 companies are large organizations that typically provide great benefits, job security, and plenty of career opportunities. Interviewing with a Fortune 500 company is a little different from interviewing with a start up. Here are four tips that will help you to prepare for a job interview with a Fortune 500 company.

Research and Prepare

When you have an interview with a Fortune 500 company, the first tip to follow is to research and prepare for the interview as much as possible. For a few days prior to the interview you should spend some time researching the company to get a better understanding of its industry, its successes and challenges, and what direction it is heading. This should give you enough insight into the company to allow you to ask educated questions and better understand how your potential role will fit into the firm. If you have been provided names of people that you are interviewing with, you should also do a bit of research on the individuals to better understand their roles before meeting with them.

Role Playing

Before the interview, it would also be a good idea to have a friend help you prepare through role-playing. When you role-playing in an interview, you should have your friend ask a number of different interview questions to ensure you are prepared. These should include having you discuss your professional background, discuss what you are looking for in a job, and explain how you would be a good fit for the company. When you are role-playing you should also have a set of questions to ask the interviewer. Having questions prepared and asked during the interview will help to show that you are educated about the company and are interested in pursuing the position.

Look Your Best

When you are getting ready for a job interview with a major company, you also need to look your best. Leading up to the interview you should get a haircut, get dental cleanings in Wilmington, DE or from your local dentist, and have your business suit taken to the dry cleaner. The day of the interview, you should make sure you are awake early enough in the morning to shower and ensure that your clothes are prepared. Even if the interviewers recommend dressing casually, you should plan on wearing a professional suit.

Follow Up

After the interview is over, you need to follow up and thank all of the people you met with for taking the time to interview you. Ideally, you will receive a business card from all people that you meet and you should send them an email within 24 hours after the meeting. These emails should not only thank them for taking the time, but also reiterate your interest in the job and how you could fit into the company culture. Afterwards, if you have not heard back from the hiring manager within a couple of weeks, you should reach out and ask for an update on the status of their hiring decision.

Landing a job with a Fortune 500 company can be a great career move. These types of jobs typically come stability, great benefits, and plenty of room for advancement. Use the four tips above to put your best foot forward in an interview.
